Engineering Technicians Keep Current with Changing
Technology
Engineering Technicians Carl Florio, Joe Dillon and
Bill Breau recently attended a number of Engineering Technician Certification and
Re-certification Courses to stay current
with ever changing construction technologies and practices.
Carl, Joe and Bill each attended four different New England Transportation Technician
Certification Program (NETTCP) Courses and received their 5-year certifications as Hot Mix
Asphalt Technicians, Concrete Field Technicians, Soil and Aggregate Technicians, and Concrete
Inspectors. Each of the NETTCP courses included at least three days of intensive instruction,
and required passing a written examination to achieve certification. Two of the courses,
Soils and Aggregate and Concrete Field Technician, also required passing practical
examinations.
In addition to the NETTCP certifications, Joe received his 5-year initial certification and
Carl received his 5-year re-certification as American Concrete Institute (ACI) Grade 1 Field
Technicians. The ACI certification program requires attendance at a two day course and
passing both written and practical examinations. Bill received his initial 5-year
certification two years ago.
Bill passed the National Institute for Certification in Engineering
Technologies (NICET) examinations for Levels I and II in the field of Transportation
Engineering Technology - Highway Construction. Joe passed the examinations for Levels III
and IV, and currently holds a certification for Level II in the field of Transportation
Engineering Technology - Highway Construction. Carl currently holds Level III certification
in both Transportatoin Engineering Technology - Highway Construction, and Underground
Utilities Construction - Water and Sewer Lines. NICET certification requires passing a
written exam for each technician level (I - IV) in each of the various sub-categories offered
for certification by NICET.
Prior to attending the courses and taking the examinations in each of the above certification
programs, both the applicant's qualifications and experience as an Engineering Technician are
reviewed by the certifying agency, with only those Engineering Technicians that meet their
requirements being eligible for certification by NETTCP, ACI and NICET.
Keeping staff members current with new and changing technology is part of Nathan L. Jacobson

and technical personnel available to work on their projects.
