Chestnut Hill Road Improvements
Killingworth, Connecticut
THE CHALLENGE: The Chestnut Hill Road project was the fourth major roadway improvement
project Nathan L. Jacobson & Associates, Inc. designed for the Town of Killingworth, and was the most
challenging of the four projects. The challenge was to provide the safety improvements desired by the
Town while at the same time maintaining the character of the roadway which was designated by Town Ordinance as
a scenic rural roadway.
THE SOLUTION: The resulting restrictions required preservation of existing features along the roadway
which forced a radical departure from the traditional design concept. Following a careful
inventory and identification of existing features located within the project area, we developed a
design to adapt to the existing environment rather than adapting the environment to fit our design. The
project involved improvements to almost one and one-half miles of designated scenic rural Town road,
pulverization of the roadway and base, storm drainage, box culvert, grading, paving, intersection
improvement and other safety improvements, including maintenance and protection of traffic.
Construction was completed in the spring of 2001. Final construction cost was approximately $1.2 million.
Complete road engineering services were provided by Nathan L. Jacobson & Associates, Inc. Project
management was directed by an associate of the firm, specializing in road design. Comprehensive services
included everything from initial meetings with Town officials, to survey, planning, design, public involvement
process, procurement of permits and easements, bidding, construction administration and full-time inspection.
